Fellow Nigerians,
Today, as we mark our nation’s Independence, we are reminded of the historic moment of October 1, 1960, when Nigeria attained freedom from colonial rule and hoisted the Green-White-Green flag as a symbol of sovereignty and unity. On this day, we pay glowing tribute to the resilience, sacrifices, and patriotism of our heroes past who envisioned a nation where peace, unity, and progress would flourish.
While we celebrate this milestone, we must also reflect on the state of our nation. Sadly, patriotism and core values that once defined us are gradually fading; giving way to corruption, greed, crime, and the pursuit of immediate gratification. This erosion of values continues to undermine the dream of our founding fathers.
It is for this reason that I strongly advocate for the building and sustenance of what I call 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙄𝙣𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 — a culture of renewed thinking, patriotism, discipline, and moral reorientation. As Stephen Covey rightly said, “Everything but without building disciplined, visionary, and patriotic minds – true development will remain elusive.
We must remember that although we gained political independence in 1960, we are yet to fully achieve independence from ignorance, poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and corruption. A new Nigeria requires a new mindset, fresh cultural values, and a stronger collective will.
Therefore, our schools must teach character alongside knowledge. Our families must return to discipline and moral upbringing. Our government at every level must lead by example with justice, fairness, and accountability. Our religious and traditional institutions must recommit to values that promote hard work, delayed gratification, and love for God and humanity.
On this 65th Independence Anniversary, I call on all Nigerians—young and old, men and women, leaders and followers—to embrace a culture of patriotism and moral renewal. Together, we can build the Nigeria of our dreams.
Happy Independence Day, Nigeria.
God bless Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
God bless Rivers State.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
